CCEA Period Dignity surveys highlight positive changes in NI schools
Over 1,300 pupils and teaching professionals participated in the latest Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment’s (CCEA) Period Dignity Pilot Scheme surveys.
The surveys, which were available online from 22 March to 7 April 2023, sought feedback on the implementation and impact of the Pilot Period Dignity scheme since its launch in September 2021. The purpose of the scheme is to:
- Increase the accessibility of period products; and
- Combat period poverty and the stigma associated with periods.
Key highlights of the report (as detailed below) include that 65% of the teachers surveyed, who had participated in CCEA’s Period Dignity/Menstrual Wellbeing training webinars, now feel more confident when talking to pupils about Period Dignity.
Approximately two thirds (64.6%) of pupils (who have started their periods), have used the free period products in their school. The majority of pupils (78.1%) found the free period products helpful in supporting their attendance at school and in carrying out normal activities during their period.
The report also found that approximately two thirds of pupils (63.5%) reported that access to the period products in their school has improved their confidence in managing their period at school.
CCEA, the Education Authority, and the Department of Education will use the responses provided to evaluate the success of the project to date and to consider any potential improvements to the scheme. We would like to extend our thanks once again to everyone who took time to complete the surveys.
