CCEA releases Provisional AS and A level results 2020 following Minister's announcement

As announced earlier this week, by the Education Minister, AS and A level students were to be awarded the higher of the centre assessment grades submitted by their school or college or the grade calculated by CCEA. Today over 24,000 students across Northern Ireland received their revised AS and A level results.

The statistics contained in this news release are the provisional outcomes for CCEA qualifications only.

A level

At the A* Grade, 14.5% of students achieved the top grade, a 5.6 percentage point increase from last year’s 2019 results. A* - A grade increased 12.7 percentage points from 32.2% in 2019 to 44.9%.  There was also an increase in the A*- E pass rate, of 1.4 percentage points from 98.5 last year to 99.9%.

Both male and female outcomes increased across all grades this year. At the A* grade, a 5.5 percentage points increase for males and 5.6 percentage points increase for females on last year. The gap between males and females, at the highest grade, remains consistent with previous years.

AS Level

Provisional outcomes at AS increased across all grades, from 95.9% in 2019 to 99.6% last year (Grades A-E).

Northern Ireland has an open market for GCE (AS and A level) qualifications. CCEA Awarding Organisation has 86% market share of GCE (AS and A level) qualifications.

The GCE (AS and A level) grades issued on 21 August 2020 were awarded on the higher of the grades submitted by schools and colleges or the grade calculated by CCEA.
