Using ICT Teaching and Learning Units
Digital Storytelling: Film & Animation
These resources will support teachers in introducing and developing Digital Storytelling and Film and/or Animation activities in their classroom, providing ideas and tips in a clear step-by-step way, using both unplugged activities as well as using technology.
Foundation Stage
At Foundation Stage, the key concepts and ICT skills involved in the three modes of Digital Storytelling are the same. There is an emphasis on the unplugged (not using technology) activities at this stage. Whether the children create an animation, a film, a presentation or a digital publication, they will need to have an understanding of the same concepts. Therefore, all three modes of ICT included in Digital Storytelling (Presenting; Publishing; Film & Animation) are addressed together in the Foundation Stage book.
Key Stage 1
At Key Stage 1 children can begin to learn about the different elements that are important in creating a film or an animation. They will learn about the 3Cs (Colour, Character, Camera) and the 3Ss (Setting, Story, Sound) as they begin to create their own films and animations.
Children at Key Stage 1 are only expected to make an unedited short film and so any editing will be simple. Teachers may also want to look at some of the Foundation Stage activities if these are more suitable for their pupils. Here are the resources:
Key Stage 2
At Key Stage 2 children will continue to learn about the elements of creating a film or animation - the 3Cs (Colour, Character, Camera) and the 3Ss (Setting, Story, Sound). They will also move on to a focus on working through the different stages of creating a film or an animation and plan for Preproduction, Production, and Postproduction.
Using Adobe Creative Cloud Express suite
The Adobe Express suite of software is freely available to Northern Ireland schools via C2k.
The following videos will give you some insight into using the various Adobe Express tools to cover Digital Storytelling: Film & Animation.
You can also view other videos covering different types of ICT (Desirable Features) - Digital Storytelling: Art & Design; Digital Storytelling: Presenting; and Digital Storytelling: Publishing.
