Dublin Rising 1916-2016 is a site built by Google in partnership with Ireland 2016, the State Centenary Programme to remember 1916, to reflect on the Republic 100 years on, and to re-imagine our future.
On this virtual tour, you can explore locations around Dublin city and discover the events of the 1916 Rising. See images from the time, listen to witness statements and learn about the people who shaped Ireland’s future. The virtual tour provides an opportunity for pupils to engage with the topic through a popular medium, helping to improve their understanding and experience as well as promoting creative thinking and discussion.
The resources could inspire tasks that would support experiences in Desktop Publishing, Presentation, Researching, Working with Moving Images and Working with Images.

The virtual tour provides pupils with the opportunity to develop their talking and listening, and reading skills through independent learning and shared experience.
Opportunities to develop Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities
Using the content pupils can analyse patterns and relationships in the information with which they have been provided. They also have the opportunity to investigate and discuss the historical perspectives of meaning, ideas and attitudes relevant to the period.
As they learn about the issues and ideas of the time, students are encouraged to understand and manage not only the information available to them but also their emotions and reactions.
Providing students with the means to research new information and ideas allows them scope to take the initiative and make choices as they steer their own course through the learning.
Possible Task?
Create an interactive map of Dublin detailing locations of importance during the Rising.
Using presentation software, start with a map of Dublin and pinpoint important location relating to the Rising. Research and store relevant information and images (if possible also source audio clips and video files – or why not create them?) and place them on a number of slides. On the first slide (the map) create buttons (i.e. shapes) that link to the relevant slides.
