Lesson 5: Reaction to the Battle of the Somme in Ireland

This lesson will look at how the Battle of the Somme was perceived and viewed back in Ireland. The lesson will explore personal reactions of people at home to news of death and how the Somme influenced popular opinion and resulted in a drop off in enlistment, resulting in the introduction of conscription. The lesson will also explore the role of the Easter Rising of 1916 and how participants in both events came to be remembered.
Lesson Intentions
- Understand reactions in Ireland to the Battle of the Somme; and
- Identify the results of conscription and the subsequent anti-conscription movement within Ireland
