STEM Futures: Science
Science has been identified as one of the key areas that has the biggest role to play in terms of growing our economy.
As a result, Science in the curriculum has a pivotal role in supporting young people as they prepare for careers in these key areas and, as such, has much to offer in terms of contributing to the recommendations of the STEM Review.
The following five STEM Futures: Science teacher resources are available below:
Say Cheese
Pupils receive a scenario and carry out scientific tests on the growth of micro-organisms. Using what they've learned, they solve how to increase the growth of mould within a blue cheese.
Animal Feed
Pupils receive a scenario related to animal feed and use science to create a possible solution. They also carry out practical work to produce their own animal feed; calculate production costs, nutritional value and profit; and develop appropriate package labelling.
Heart Matters
Pupils discover that you are never too young to start taking care of your heart. They carry out scientific investigations in order to give young people information on the effect of a high fat diet on the circulatory system. They gain scientific understanding of the causes, effects, treatment and current research on heart disease and high blood pressure. They investigate the effect of fatty deposits in arteries and learn that these start building up in childhood. By using problem-solving skills, they diagnose which patients have had a heart attack.
Cancer: Control and Combat
Pupils explore the importance of scientific research in the advancement of medicine. They analyse statistical information and investigate nutraceutical developments in cancer treatment. They carry out scientific investigations to explore the effects of nutraceuticals on cell growth. They also investigate ethical and moral issues relating to cancer research and treatments.
Capturing the Wind - The Sky is the Limit
In this unit pupils will learn about the different aspects of renewable energy. They will also learn about careers potential in renewable energy, which is a major expanding sector in Northern Ireland. The unit is creative and enquiry-based. It has been designed to promote active learning and stimulate pupils' interest in sustainable development. Pupils will have opportunities to collect and record data in practical, hands-on science experiments.
