Reciprocal Reading in Practice
Reciprocal reading is an interactive, structured reading technique. It helps children develop reading comprehension skills by providing strategies they can use to make meaning from text.
Reciprocal reading uses four strategies:
- prediction;
- clarification;
- questioning; and
- summarising.
These videos summarise how two schools, Donaghadee Primary School and St Teresa’s Primary School, Belfast, have adapted reciprocal reading to suit the needs of their school. The other nine videos in this resource provide more detail about suggested classroom practice.
Using the videos
Teachers or literacy co-ordinators can use these videos to find out more about reciprocal reading. These two schools use a different approach. Donaghadee Primary School introduces the strategy from Primary 1 upwards. St Teresa’s Primary School uses the strategy in Key Stage 2 only.
You can show extracts of these videos to your class to demonstrate some of the strategies they can use.
