Reciprocal Reading in Practice

Reciprocal Reading

Assessment

If you plan to use reciprocal reading during your guided reading lessons, it is useful to plan for each lesson so that you clearly understand what you want the children to achieve. This may include a focus on key vocabulary used in the text or, for example, a focus on using higher order questioning techniques. During the lesson, jot down your observations and follow these up as appropriate.

If you are using reciprocal reading as an intervention strategy over a period of 12 weeks, you could use a suitable reading comprehension test to assess the children at the beginning and end of the programme. Make short notes on how the children are progressing, ensuring this does not detract from your engagement with the children or interrupt the flow of the lesson.
