Foyle Film Festival

Foyle Film Festival Logo

Foyle Film Festival launched CCEA’s Moving Images Arts Awards Showcase in 2003, with the support and sponsorship of Michael Bond from City of Derry Crystal.

The showcase was conceived as a way of marking and celebrating the work produced by students undertaking the new Moving Image Arts subject. Since its introduction 21 years ago, this annual student showcase has gone from strength to strength and has become one of the highlight events of the Foyle Film Festival programme.

The festival highlights and celebrates the talent, imagination, and creativity of the MIA students by awarding the beautiful City of Derry Crystal Awards for the best films. It is with a great deal of pride and pleasure that Foyle Film Festival provides a platform for the work of these budding young filmmakers. The festival looks forward to accepting the work of MIA students into the Light In Motion (LIM) Competition — which are Oscar® and BAFTA affiliated — in future years.

In order to capitalise on Foyle Film Festival’s unique position as an Oscar®, BAFTA & IFTA affiliated festival through its Light In Motion (LIM) Competition, the festival has held regular industry networking events since 2014. These industry events bring award winning industry professionals to the city in order to inspire and upskill the next generation of filmmakers.

Foyle Film Festival bridges education to industry looking at craft skills in film, TV and immersive production. Moving Image Arts students, through the BFI Film Academy, are given direct access to all conference events, and if possible special guests will also provide additional talks and support. The Light In Motion Short Film competition completes the circle by giving filmmakers a platform to showcase their work and potentially win a LIM Award, enabling the winning film to be submitted for Oscar® consideration.

‘During my time on the course, I learnt a lot, especially in terms of what to expect on a film set. I definitely gained a lot of hands-on experience in post-production, production and pre-production as well … really valuable stuff … gained a lot of tips and tricks from our tutors and learnt a lot in masterclasses. My dream role in this industry is to direct and in the short course, I actually got to direct a short film called Inside… that experience was so good. Taking part in the BFI course has actually opened a lot of doors for me, such as me being able to take part in a BFI Residential in Edinburgh … for anybody who is thinking about taking part in these short courses, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and definitely the most worthwhile on in terms of filmmaking … I’m so happy that I did it. It was amazing.’
