Gambling and Gaming Awareness at Key Stage 2
Five ready-to-use Personal Health and Understanding lessons (including fifteen individual activities) which focus on helping pupils to understand what gaming is, the types of games available and some of risks to be aware of when playing them.
These lessons:
- include teacher notes and pupil resource sheets;
- can be used individually or as part of a series; and
- are targeted at Key Stage 2 but can be used more widely as teachers feel is appropriate.
Please note: Each lesson references an aspect of DENI Children and Young People’s Emotional and Wellbeing in Education Framework and CCEA Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Primary Guidance.
Lesson 1 – How do you spend your leisure time?
During these three activities, pupils will understand more about which leisure activities they, and their classmates, do and do not enjoy.
Lesson 2 – What is gaming?
During these three activities, pupils will understand what gaming is, the types of games available, and some of the risks to be aware of when playing them.
Lesson 3 – Why do we enjoy gaming?
During these three activities, pupils will:
- recognise some of the reasons many of us enjoy gaming;
- identify one reason they enjoy or don’t enjoy it; and
- understand how they are like, or different from, others.
Lesson 4 – How much money and time do you spend gaming?
During these four activities, pupils will:
- think about the amount of time they spend gaming each week;
- discuss in-game transactions; and
- reflect on the difference between ‘selected’ and ‘random’ (gambling) purchases.
Lesson 5 – Did you read the label?
During these two activities, pupils will:
- think about the age labels on their physical boxed and online games;
- recognise that some games are not age appropriate for them to play; and
- understand the meaning of the violence, bad language, and fear content descriptions.
