GCSE Further Mathematics (2017)
The CCEA GCSE Further Mathematics specification encourages students to extend their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding. It gives them opportunities to select and apply mathematical techniques and methods to everyday situations.
Students design mathematical models that allow them to use problem-solving strategies and apply a broad range of mathematics to different situations.
There are no other GCSE specifications in the UK comparable to this one. The specification exceeds the level of challenge offered by GCSE Mathematics qualifications in England and our GCSE Mathematics (Higher Tier).
This qualification builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills developed through the Mathematics and Numeracy Area of Learning.
This specification is unitised, so it’s possible to take part of the assessment before the end of the course.
The specification has four units. Students must complete Unit 1 and two of the three other units.
- Unit 1: Pure Mathematics
- Unit 2: Mechanics
- Unit 3: Statistics
- Unit 4: Discrete and Decision Mathematics.
Skills developed through our GCSE Further Mathematics
This specification supports the Northern Ireland Curriculum at Key Stage 4 and gives students further opportunities to achieve their potential and develop skills for life. It gives students the appropriate mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding to help them progress to further academic and vocational study and to employment. These skills include:
- selecting and applying mathematical techniques and methods to mathematical, everyday and real-world situations;
- reasoning mathematically;
- interpreting and communicating mathematical information;
- making deductions and inferences; and
- drawing conclusions.
The specification also extends students’ base in mathematics from which they can progress to:
- higher studies in mathematics; and/or
- studies such as science, geography, technology or business, which contain a significant requirement in mathematics beyond Higher Tier GCSE Mathematics.
