Personal Development

On this page

Personal Development is a process that involves the world of the young person. In this subject strand, pupils have opportunities to explore a range of topics and develop Whole Curriculum Skills and Capabilities. Pupils learn about:

  • Self-Awareness
  • Personal Health
  • Relationships.

Personal Development encourages pupils to become personally, emotionally, socially and physically effective, and to lead healthy, safe and fulfilled lives. It also encourages them to become confident, independent and responsible citizens, making informed and responsible choices and decisions throughout their lives.

Schools can play a significant part in helping pupils to cope with the challenges of everyday living and in their development towards adulthood. Schools should consider these factors when planning for Personal Development.

Teachers should give pupils the opportunity to explore relevant, real-life contexts that are based on the statutory requirements. These should help them to develop a range of Whole Curriculum Skills and Capabilities.

For further details, see the Statutory Requirements for Personal Development at Key Stage 3 and the Key Stage 3 Non-Statutory Guidance for Personal Development.
