Learning for Life and Work

Learning for Life and Work

Learning for Life and Work is a compulsory Area of Learning at Key Stage 3. It has four subject strands: Employability, Local and Global Citizenship, Personal Development, and Home Economics.

Learning for Life and Work builds on Personal Development and Mutual Understanding at primary. It aims to bring closer links between the curriculum and the knowledge, skills and capabilities that are necessary for life and work. It explicitly addresses the three main objectives of the curriculum: to develop young people as individuals, as contributors to society, and as contributors to the economy and the environment.

It is important that teachers highlight to pupils the relevance and application of subject learning to modern day life and future employment. Pupils learn effectively when they are motivated by relevance and can emotionally engage with subject matter that is applied to real-life contexts.

For further details, see Learning for Life and Work for Key Stage 3.

The four subject strands of Learning for Life and Work have statutory requirements that schools must meet. Learning for Life and Work is also embedded through the key elements and is reflected in the requirements for all other Areas of Learning. Each school must decide how best to deliver Learning for Life and Work across Key Stage 3.
