Tradition

Intro

Tradition:

  • implies continuity;
  • implies the creation of new material within an existing, established and broadly agreed framework;
  • has to do with the passing of something from one person to another; it primarily is subject to an oral transmission. In other words, the music, song and dance are passed directly from person to person and are retained in the performer’s memory – human memory, therefore, plays an important role in shaping tradition.
