The concertina (a smaller, hexagonal-shaped accordion) was developed initially in England in the mid- to late-19th century. It wasn’t until a little later, when the Anglo-German system of notes was developed, that it began to take-off in Ireland.
In this latter system, two different notes sounded from the one button depending on whether the player pushed or pulled a note. One of the most famous players of the 20th century was Mrs Crotty of Clare.
