Changes to GCSEs

The Minister for Education Peter Weir, MLA, announced on the 28th of June 2016 that he was lifting the restriction on schools here offering GCSEs graded 9-1.

This means that schools are now free to offer GCSEs graded 9-1, apart from English language and sciences, in line with the Minister’s statement.

In November 2016, a letter was issued to all schools by the Department of Education, informing them that WJEC GCSEs would not be available for schools here to use from September 2017.

WJEC Eduqas GCSEs will still be available to schools here.

Further details on the reasons behind this decision can be found in the letter issued to schools in November 2016. A copy of this letter is available below:

CCEA Awarding Organisation will continue to grade GCSEs using letters, with an additional C* grade. It will also be putting in place a new system for awarding the A* grade. AQA, OCR, Pearson and WJEC Eduqas will grade their GCSEs 9-1.

Details of GCSE subjects which are available for schools here to teach in 2016 and 2017 and beyond are given on this website.
