At the end of each year teachers need to assess and report on pupils’ progress in:
- each Area of Learning;
- each Cross-Curricular Skill; and
- the Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities (Other Skills).
For the Cross-Curricular Skills, teachers must refer to Levels of Progression for Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT each year.
At the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 – in Years 4, 7 and 10 – they must also make a judgement about the level each pupil has achieved in each skill and report this to parents/guardians, as well as to the Department of Education through CCEA. (Note that teachers do not need to assign a level in Years 3, 5, 6, 8 and 9.)
See the Assess & Progress section for more detailed advice and guidance.
