The signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty created two factions amongst republicans: Pro-treaty and Anti-treaty. The Pro-treaty faction believed that the treaty could be used as a stepping stone to gaining full independence whilst the Anti-faction believed that the signing of the treaty was treacherous and fell short of the desire for a fully independent state. After a Pro-treaty victory at the polling stations, tensions boiled over leading to the Irish Civil War.
