Éamon de Valera

Éamon de Valera is one of the most well known political figures of twentieth century Ireland. De Valera played a prominent role throughout a defining period of Irish history; he fought on the streets of Dublin during the Easter Rising, lead Sinn Féin to a historic election victory, he was a political leader during the War of Independence and the Civil War, founded Fianna Fáil and was the head of state for the Irish Republic on three occasions.

The resources examine the topic utilizing a number of different media, which serve to engage pupils with the material, challenging them to think more creatively and encourage discussion.

Opportunities to develop

Possible Task

Using desktop publishing software/comic creation software, create a comic that assesses Éamon de Valera’s involvement and contribution in a significant period of Irish history.

Working in pairs, research and save a collection of images of Éamon de Valera and assess and evaluate his contribution in events such as the 1918 General Election, the War of Independence and the Civil War.
