Earth Science

CCEA has endorsed this resource which was supported and developed by Earth Science Ireland through its educational committee Earth Science Outreach.

The resource complements the Northern Ireland Curriculum and provides information and ideas to bring Earth Science to the classroom in practical and relevant ways for pupils in Key Stage 2.

The learning activities within the materials support the development of the Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities as well as opportunities to develop the cross-curricular skills of Communication, Using Mathematics and Using ICT.

Learning Opportunities

The following provides an outline for the learning opportunities that exist within this resource and illustrates how it has been closely aligned to the Northern Ireland Primary Curriculum.

Curriculum Objectives

To develop the young person as an individual

  • Develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world around them.

To develop the young person as a contributor to the economy and environment

  • Appreciate the environment and their role in maintaining and improving it;

The World Around Us

INTERDEPENDENCE

Pupils should be enabled to explore:

  • how they and others interact in the world;
  • the effect of people on the natural and built environment over time.

PLACE

Pupils should be enabled to explore:

  • ways in which people depend on the features and materials in places and how they adapt to their environment;
  • features of, and variations in places, including physical;
  • change over time in places;
  • positive and negative effects of natural and human events upon a place over time.

MOVEMENT AND ENERGY

Pupils should be enabled to explore:

  • the causes and effect of energy, forces and movement;
  • causes that affect the movement of people;
  • how movement can be accelerated by human and natural events such earthquakes;
  • positive and negative consequences of movement and its impact on people, places and interdependence.

CHANGE OVER TIME

Pupils should be enabled to explore:

  • how change is a feature of the human and natural world and may have consequences for our lives and the world around us;
  • ways in which change occurs over both short and long periods of time in the physical and natural world;
  • The effects of positive and negative changes globally and how we contribute to some of these changes.
