Welcome to the Parents’ Page

As parents/guardians, you have an important role to play in the education of your children. This page is aimed at providing parents of children in Irish-medium schools with opportunities to become more involved in their child’s learning, regardless of whether or not they speak Irish themselves.

Below is a series of links to interactive games which you can play at home with your child.

Foghlaí Focal Word Game (Years 1 and 2)

This is a game aimed at helping children recognise commonly-used words. To play the game, children must spell the missing word correctly. Each time they select an incorrect letter, the pirate will take a step further along the plank. Encourage your child to spell the words correctly and save the pirate from the shark-infested water!

Féasta Focal Word Game (Years 1 and 2)

This is another game to help children recognise commonly-used words. It allows children to click on the words and hear a recording to help with pronunciation. This is particularly useful to those parents with little or no Irish as it provides them with the opportunity to hear the words and practice pronunciation with their child. Other activities include a word search, matching activity and a scrambled words game.

Cód na Gaeilge Phonics Game (Years 2–7)

This is a series of fun games to support the Irish-Medium Phonics Programme. Phonics is a method of teaching children to read which involves ‘decoding’ words by sounds rather than recognising whole words. Children blend sounds together to make a word. In these games, children will hear a recording of a word and then attempt to spell it correctly using the phonics approach. The games provide an ideal opportunity for parents with little or no Irish to hear the pronunciation of words and to encourage their child to ‘decode’ them.

Clár Luathléitheoireachta (Early Reading Programme) Games (Years 1 and 2)

These games are based on a reading programme used in Irish-medium schools. Children will be able to select a game based on the book they are reading. The games include recordings of the most important words in each book, providing parents with little or no Irish with the opportunity to become more actively involved in their child’s reading. There is also a selection of fun activities for the children to complete based on each book.

Snas ar Scéal Writing Game (Years 3–7)

The aim of these games is to expand children’s vocabulary by correctly selecting appropriate words and phrases. The games will encourage children to think of alternative words and phrases when writing and give them the confidence to write with increasing accuracy and variety.
